The Basque Country has four universities divided into 28 faculties or schools, 3 higher technical schools and 11 university schools, in which over 4,000 professors provide instruction for the more than 91,000 students.
The University of the Basque Country (EHU-UPV) is a public institution with campuses in all the Basque provinces of Euskadi. The University offers a broad range of studies including Medicine, the Sciences, Fine Arts, Law, Economics, Business Studies and Industrial Engineering.
In addition to the public university, the University of Deusto,a prestigious and historic Jesuit university, also has campuses in all three Basque provinces.
Its prestige rests primarily on two main pillars, the Deusto Law School and the School of Business Studies. The latter is known internationally as «La Comercial» (The Company) for turning out some of the most highly reputed business people and managers of the some of the most important private corporations in Spain.
The University of Navarra has a campus in San Sebastian offering courses through two schools: The Higher School of Engineering, founded in 1961, now offers five degrees (Industrial Engineer, Materials Engineer, Electronic and Automation Engineer, Industrial Organisation Engineer, and Telecommunications Engineer), and the Higher Institute of Secretarial and Administrative Studies.
Since September 1997 Euskadi has hosted the first private university approved by the Basque Parliament after the Franco regime: the University of Mondragón. This institution, created under the auspices of the industrial group of the same name, is the first "cooperative university" in Europe.
